Neighborhood Cafe, St. Paul
Mike Gabiou and Chelsie Glaubitz have been telling me about the Benny’s at Neighbhorhood Cafe for months. In addition to the traditional Eggs Benedict, Neighborhood Cafe has an Eggs Florentine and a Benny with Andouille Sausage. Our table ordered all three but I went for the classic ham Benny. The muffin was the best I’ve had so far. It was evenly toasted and avoided the dreaded burnt edge. It was the perfect thickness to stave off sogginess but not so thick that the rest of the Benny components are overpowered. The ham was okay but didn’t have much taste. The eggs were basted. This is easier than poaching and it tastes okay but the eggs are flat and not light and fluffy like they should be on a Benny. The sauce was very good although it seemed to be missing something - could have been pepper. The service was excellent and speedy. They even gave me a to go cup for my coffee. All in all, I really enjoyed my breakfast there. And we even saw Rep. Erin Murphy duck in for a bite.
